William R. "Bill" Smith

October 25, 1946 — November 5, 2023

William R. "Bill" Smith, a lifelong resident of Kansas, was born on October 25, 1946, in Victoria, and passed away peacefully from natural causes on November 5, 2023, in Topeka. Known for his warm smile, contagious laughter, and the ability to make a friend in any room, Bill's personality was as big as his heart.

Bill was the beloved son of Ross B Smith and Anne E Desch. He grew up in a lively household with his siblings Wayne, Wanda, and Wanita. Bill carried the values of family, hard work, and loyalty throughout his life, principles that were evident in his relationships with his son, Ross A Smith, his daughter, Robynn A Smith, and his devoted wife, Debra K Smith.

After graduating high school, Bill bravely served his country as a veteran of the Air Force. Post his service, he dedicated 33 years of his life to working as a union member at Goodyear and was a certified mechanic. His work ethic was unmatched, and his dedication and commitment to his job were admired by his colleagues and friends.

Bill had a profound love for working on cars, specifically restoring AMC's. His passion led him to attend AMC car shows and drag races nationwide. He wasn't just a spectator but also a well-known figure in the car-enthusiast community. Known as Rand F***in McNally, his knowledge of cars was vast and his expertise unparalleled.

Despite his love for cars, Bill never let work consume him. He made sure to spend quality time with his family. He was known to spend several days a week at the salvage yard with his little girl, affectionately referred to as "Tootsie Amy." And he spent countless hours under the hood of a car, teaching his son everything he knew about mechanics. His children will forever cherish these moments spent with their father.

Bill was also a pet lover who grew up with several dogs and cats. He treated them with the same love and affection he had for his family. His pets were more than just animals to him; they were another part of his family, another child to love and care for.

Bill's love for conversations was legendary, and if you ever engaged in a chat with him, you'd know it was hard to get a word in edgewise. His stories were captivating, his laughter infectious, and his spirit, indomitable. Bill also had the unique ability to form lasting friendships. He made friends all over the country from going to car shows, and he considered them his best friends. His children too, made lifelong friends through these connections.

In the end, Bill's life wasn't just about his achievements or his interests. It was about the relationships he formed, the people he loved, and the lives he touched. His passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew him.

William R "Bill" Smith was a loving husband, a caring father, a doting pet parent, and a loyal friend. His zest for life, his passion for cars, and his love for his family and friends are his lasting legacy. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the life of a man who truly lived every moment to its fullest. May he rest
