William Harvey Sumner, affectionately known as "Bill", passed away peacefully on September 19, 2023, in Topeka, KS. Born in Holton, KS, on August 22, 1936, Bill's life was a testament to family, hard work, perseverance, and the love of music.
Raised in the Holton area, Bill was the youngest of 10 children. He was preceded in death by his parents, eight of his brothers and sisters, and his beloved children, Shelli and Derrick. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Kay, of the home; grandson Andrew Schreiner of Overland Park and 3 great- grandchildren; brother Don and sister-in-law Peggy Sumner, and many nieces and nephews. Bill's family was a constant source of support and love, and he cherished the time he spent with all of them.
His early years were filled with the usual childhood adventures and the beginning of his lifelong love for country music. As a graduate of Holton High School, Bill was known for his intelligence and work ethic. After graduation, Bill enlisted in the U. S. Army Reserve for 6 years serving from 1958 to 1964.
Bill embarked on a rewarding career at AT&T as a Systems Technician. His colleagues remember him as a dedicated worker, always ready to lend a hand and share his knowledge. His work at AT&T spanned decades, and he left a memorable mark on the company and his colleagues.
In addition to his great extended family, Bill's true passion was music. He was an accomplished guitarist and singer, playing for years as a band member for County Connections. His love for country music was infectious, and he had the rare ability to touch people's hearts with his songs. The power of his music brought people together to comfort, and to inspire.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life for Bill on Friday, October 6, 2023, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Shawnee Lake Shelter House #6, 3512 SE East Edge Road, Topeka.
