Sterling Ryder Whittle

With broken hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved son, Sterling Ryder Whittle, on July 12, 2026, after a courageous 50-day fight.

Sterling was born on May 23, 2026, at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Shortly after his birth, he was transferred to St. Louis Children's Hospital, where he spent every day surrounded by an incredible team of medical professionals and the endless love of his family.

Sterling was born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), a rare birth defect in which a hole in the diaphragm allows organs from the abdomen to move into the chest. This prevents the lungs from developing normally and makes breathing after birth incredibly difficult. During his 50-day journey, Sterling endured more than 30 procedures, helping pave the way for future children facing this complex diagnosis. From the very beginning, his life became a journey of courage, resilience, and hope. His motto quickly became, "Slow and Steady."

Though his life was brief, Sterling filled it with unforgettable moments. He found comfort in holding Mommy and Daddy's hands. His favorite song was "Don't Worry, Be Happy," which brought peace and smiles during the most difficult days. One of his sweetest moments was when Daddy gave him whisker kisses, bringing out the precious smile that melted everyone's hearts. Sterling was also well known for his infamous mustaches that brought smiles throughout the NICU.

Sterling is survived by his loving parents, Carrie Reed and Caleb Whittle; his brother, Steven; his grandparents; great-grandparents; aunts; uncles; cousins; and countless family members, friends, and caregivers whose lives were forever changed by his strength and spirit.

Although our time together was far too short, Sterling's impact will last a lifetime. He showed us that strength isn't measured by size or age, but by the courage to keep fighting one breath at a time. He reminded us to celebrate every small victory and to cherish every touch, every smile, and every moment together. Our precious warrior may no longer be in our arms, but he will forever remain in our hearts.

Slow and steady, sweet Sterling. You fought harder than anyone could have ever imagined, and we could not be more proud to be your parents. Until we hold you again, you will be loved, remembered, and missed every single day.
