Stephen William Duffy, affectionately known as Steve by his friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2024, in Topeka, Kansas. Born on March 4, 1944, in Peoria, Illinois, Steve's life was marked by a joyous and adventurous spirit that touched everyone he knew.
Steve grew up in Peoria, the beloved son of the late Bernadette and Joseph Duffy, and brother to James and Timothy Duffy, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Peoria Central High School and soon embarked on a career that would span decades. Steve began working in the yards for TP&W Railroad and later served as a waybilling clerk for Santa Fe, a position that took him to California in October 1988. He dedicated many years to the railroad industry before retiring from BNSF (Brand New Santa Fe) in November 2005.
Steve's passion for life was evident in his many interests and hobbies. He had a deep fascination with steam engines and was an active member of the Topeka Model Railroading Association. His love for movement extended to roller skating, and he was an enthusiastic participant in many family outings, whether it was playing cards, fishing, boating, hunting, or camping. Steve was also a devoted Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troops 203 in Peoria, IL, and 48 in Topeka, KS, guiding young lives with wisdom and humor.
Cooking was another of Steve's pleasures, and he was always eager to experiment with new recipes, much to the delight of his family and friends. Known for his playful nature, Steve was a notorious prankster, keeping his grandchildren on their toes with his antics. His adventurous spirit led him to travel extensively with his beloved wife Cecelia, exploring destinations such as Belize, Cozumel, Alaska, Ireland, and across the United States. Steve's love for capturing memories saw him rarely without his camera, documenting the family's cherished moments.
Steve's love for sports was undeniable, particularly his passion for ice skating and ice hockey, with the Chicago Blackhawks holding a special place in his heart as his favorite team. His enthusiasm for the game was infectious and brought the family together on many occasions.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Cecelia Duffy, and their children: Cathy (Ron) Cotty, the late Steven Davis, Stacie Davis, and Scott (Jessica) Davis. Steve was a cherished grandfather to Alex (Jordan) Davis, Quintin Cotty, Isabella Davis, Dylan Davis, Carter Davis, Zabrina Cotty, and Easton Davis. Each grandchild held a unique place in his heart, and he took great pride in their accomplishments and adventures.
Friends and family will remember Steve as a man of many talents and a heart full of humor. He was the quintessential handyman, always ready to tackle a project or lend a helping hand. His adventurous nature inspired those around him to embrace life with enthusiasm and curiosity.
As we bid farewell to Stephen William Duffy, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, a legacy of love, laughter, and adventure. His spirit will live on in the stories shared, the memories cherished, and the lives he touched. Steve was a remarkable man who will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
