Sandra Kay Covert (Curtis)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sandra Kay Covert (Curtis), a beloved daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. After a courageous battle with cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), Sandy passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, in Baldwin City, Kansas, on July 9, 2026, at the age of 56.
Born on December 6, 1969, in Merriam, Kansas, Sandy built a life centered on family, friendship, creativity, laughter, sea breezes, and making lasting memories. Throughout her life, she called many Kansas communities home, including Shawnee, De Soto, Hiawatha, Topeka, Lawrence, and Baldwin City. Wherever she lived, Sandy shared her warmth, kindness, and creative spirit with those around her.
Sandy worked in a variety of professions, each reflecting her compassionate nature and genuine desire to help and care for others. Whether through her work or in her personal life, she touched countless lives with her generosity, strength, and unwavering love.
She is survived by her father, Stan Curtis; her mother, Harriett Curtis (Murphy); her sister, Lisa Frye (Craig Frye); former spouse of 25 years and father to their children; Charles Covert; her children, Kayle Ankenbauer and Curtis Covert; and her cherished grandchildren, Adalynn, Anderson, Allison Growcock, and Jameson Ankenbauer.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Roy and Maxine Murphy, and Tony and Thelma Curtis.
Sandy also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with her and carry her love in their hearts.
In accordance with Sandy's wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. She asked that the gathering be one of happiness, love, laughter, and cherished memories as family and friends come together to celebrate the beautiful life she lived. Details will be shared as they become available.
Fair winds and following seas, Sandy. May you sail peacefully in beautiful waters, forever free from pain.
