Samuel Eugene Dicks

Samuel Eugene Dicks, 82, from Emporia, KS died May 7, 2018 at Burlington Life Care Center from Alzheimer's. He was born in June 15, 1935 in Wellston, Missouri. He graduated from Wellston High School and received his BA in history and speech/theatre at Dakota Wesleyan in South Dakota. He obtained his Masters Degree in history at the University of South Dakota, and his Doctorate at the University of Oklahoma. He taught high school in Yankton, South Dakota, served in the US Army and the South Dakota National Guard. Sam also taught courses at Emporia State University for 35 years in early European and World History, the History of Science, Historiography and Historical Method, and Introduction to Genealogy until 2000. He continued as University Historian until retiring in 2003. He helped with the publication of Teaching History: A Journal of Methods, and edited Recollections: The Memoirs of Lyman Beecher Kellogg. He was also the producer and director of Channel 8 at ESU, which in 1981 won the ACE Award from the National Cable Television Association for "Blessed, Blessed Mama." In his free time, he helped host a chess club for over 15 years, was an avid member of the Forum Club, acted in many plays, and loved to travel. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, three sons, a daughter, and four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
