RV (Vic) Van Camp was born February 9, 1933 to Howard and Lorene (Roberts) Van Camp in Franklin, NE. He grew up on a farm where he and his sisters, Karen Brown,Eaton, CO and Miriam Cowan, Omaha, NE learned good work ethic. In High School he excelled in football earning a position on the All State Football Team as a Nose Tackle. Enrolling at the University of Nebraska he played freshman football. His second year of college he transferred to Kansas State University and enrolled in the pre vet curriculum, graduating in 1957 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. It was at KSU that he met his future wife Marjorie Gigot. They were married in 1956 in Garden City, Ks.
Vic and Marj established a Veterinary Practice in Hoxie, Ks where three of their children were born. In three years they sold their Hoxie business and moved to Colby, Ks where Vic practiced Veterinary Medicine and they raised their children. Retirement brought them to Topeka, allowing them to spend more time with family, especially Grandchildren.
Vic's real passion was KSU Football and Basketball. He was a "Nebraska by birth, Kansas by Choice" kind of guy.
Vic believed in giving back to his community and was active in the Colby Area Chamber of Commerce, School Board, Kansas Livestock Association, KVMA, Kansas State University Alumni Board and the Colby City Council where he served as Mayor for several terms and was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church.
A season ticket holder for over 50 years meant many miles traveling from Colby to Manhattan to cheer on and critic his wildcat teams. His family, wife Marj, sons Kurt(Shelly), Smithville,MO, Kipp(Tracy), Topeka, daughters, Kim(Lynn) Danielson, Salina, Keli, Topeka all learned to share his love of KSU Sports. Even the grandchildren, Krystal(Seth) Reno, KC,MO, Keegan(Kara), Tulsa, OK, Kassadi(Shane)Florence, Plattsburg, MO, and Kara, Smithville, MO , Tyler and Charlie, Kolby and Weston, Topeka all look forward to football games wearing the royal purple. The Great Grandchildren Mason Reno, Kaden Van Camp, Chase, Karlie and McKinley Florence are yet to be totally brain washed but are all outfitted in purple.
Vic's long struggle with Alzheimer's is over and though he will be sadly missed he is now at peace. His Legacy of lessons taught will be long remembered.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 11, 10:30am at the First Christian Church, 1880 SW Gage, Topeka. Memorials may be given in his honor to the Combat Air Museum, 7016 SE Forbes Avenue, Topeka, the First Christian Church, 1880 SW Gage, Topeka, or the Thomas County Historical Society, 1905 S.
