Russell Galen Freel, known by many as Russ, was a man whose life was a testament to valor, resourcefulness, and generosity. Born on January 30th, 1949, in Topeka, KS, Russ embarked on a journey that would span 74 years. His journey came to a peaceful end surrounded by his family in Mayetta, KS, on August 21st, 2023, due to an unfortunate lung disease. Russ's remarkable life, however, will never end in the hearts and minds of those who were lucky enough to know him.
Russ was the beloved son of Kenneth and Leona Freel, and loving brother of Ronald G. Freel, who preceded him in death. Their memories were sparks that lit the fire of Russ's determination and courage, attributes that were irrefutably demonstrated in his 22-year service in the U.S. Navy. Serving as a Gun Fire Control Technician, Russ held his duty in high regard — a shining example of his courage. His commitment to service didn't end there as he went on to work as an Electronic Technician, and spent several years working on electronics for the US Postal Office before retirement.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Russ was a successful entrepreneur, having owned several small businesses. This showed another dimension of his character — a man who was not afraid to take risks and forge his own path. His work ethic was an inspirational beacon. He encouraged those who knew him to strive for success, take chances, never fear failure and to always stand up for what's right no matter what.
Work was just one facet of Russ's multifaceted life. He was a man of many interests and talents, and he possessed a love for life that was infectious. Russ had an adventurous spirit; he loved to travel and stay active. This spirit was evident in his love for building and fixing various things, particularly dune buggies and race cars. These weren't just hobbies for Russ. They were testament to his creativity, his resilience, his resourcefulness, and his unwavering willingness to get his hands dirty.
Above the many hobbies and accomplishments that transpired during his life, Russ cherished his family more than anything. Spending time with his children and grandchildren was his greatest delight. His family was his heartbeat, the center around which his world revolved. He believed that the moments shared with his loved ones were the most precious jewels life had to offer. He is survived by his sister, Lois Gibbs; his children Donny Freel (Whitney), Former wife, Brenda Calvin and their children; Jessica Pearson (Shane), Jenifer Bailey (Bob), Kurtis Duncan (Amber), Ronda Sommer (Denton), Galen Freel, and 16 grandchildren.
Russ was a man of selfless heart, of handy skill, and generous spirit. His life was a powerful illustration of the extraordinary things that ordinary people can achieve with resilience, determination, and love. His story is an inspiration. A call to all of us to live courageously, love generously, and engage the world with a spirit of curiosity and adventure.
In the words of the US Navy Admiral Farragut, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead." Russ didn't just live that message, he was that message. His legacy is an invitation to each of us to live our own lives with a relentless spirit and to maintain the determination and courage to brave the storm, regardless of the obstacles. As we remember Russ, let us celebrate not only the life he lived but also the lives he touched and the inspiration he provided. His journey may have ended, but his spirit, his legacy, and his message live on.
