Robert Douglas Matthews, known affectionately as Bob to his friends and family, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on June 10, 2024, in Topeka, Kansas. Born on September 29, 1962, in Tacoma, Washington, Bob's life was a tapestry of dedication, love, and service, woven with the threads of his passions and beliefs.
Bob was predeceased by his father, Lonnie Max Matthews, who passed away on July 8, 1970, his mother, Carol Eaton Matthews Murdock, who left us on November 15, 1994, Carolyne Canela (Matthews)and Maxine Marker (Matthews), who passed away on May 8, 2018, and June 3, 2020, respectively.
Bob's legacy is carried on by his loving family, including his brother Lonnie O. Matthews of Phoenix, AZ; brother Billy R. Matthews of Wichita; sister Waneta A. Weis (Matthews) of Wamego; sister Heather L. Bergstrom (Murdock) of Wamego; his proud and loving son, Lonnie Max Matthews of Topeka; his ex-wife and best friend, Caroline Johnson of Lawton OK; and stepdaughter, Shelby Karbowski of Lawton OK.
A proud student of Riley County High School, Bob's professional life was characterized by his time as a former Truck Driver with United Van Lines and as an Equipment Operator at Futamura. He was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and the camaraderie he shared with his colleagues.
Bob's personal life was marked by his deep love for his family and friends. He was a loving father, brother, uncle, and a best friend to many. His patriotism shone brightly through his unwavering support of the United States military and his staunch advocacy for the 2nd amendment. Bob was also proud of his 18 years of sobriety, a testament to his strength and selfless desire to be the best version of himself for those he loved.
His interests extended beyond his work and advocacy. Bob was a man who cherished the simple joys of life, finding pleasure in the company of his family and friends. His presence was a source of comfort and joy to those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Those who knew Bob would describe him as loving and passionate. He approached life with a selfless spirit that endeared him to many. Bob's ability to connect with people from all walks of life, to share their joys and sorrows, and to offer a helping hand whenever needed, defined his character.
Bob Matthews lived a life that was full and meaningful. His laughter, his love, and his unwavering spirit will be remembered by all who were touched by his presence. As we bid farewell to a man of great virtue, we celebrate the time we had with him and the countless memories we will treasure forever.
In the wake of Bob's departure, his family takes solace in knowing that his legacy of love, passion, and selflessness will continue to live on through them and through the many lives he impacted.
