Robert L. "Nick" Nicolay

February 11, 1935 — January 13, 2024

Robert L. "Nick" Nicolay passed away peacefully on January 13, 2024 at the age of 88. The youngest of Gertrude and Orrin Nicolay's eight children, he was born on February 11, 1935 in Osage City, KS. When Nick was a child, his family moved to Topeka where he lived the rest of his life. Nick enjoyed a full life marked by dedication to his family and his work. He brightened the lives of those who knew him with his kindness, his laughter and his love.

Nick is survived by his wife, Cathy Nicolay, and their four children: Julie (Wayne) Larrivee, Rob (Gerry) Nicolay, Matt (Tracy) Nicolay and Chris Nicolay. He leaves behind several grandchildren: Scott, Rachel, Bryan, Monique, Paige, Sloan, Kate and Isaac; and great-grandchildren: John, Nicole, Mekenzie and Lilly.

Nick owned and ran Nicolay Service for over four decades, working alongside his son and business partner, Matt. His business was characterized by integrity and reliability, which was a testament to his belief in the value of hard work and quality service.

In retirement, Nick always sought ways to stay active. He loved tending to his yard and finding projects to care for his home, then relaxing with a well-earned nap in his favorite chair. He expressed his creativity and love of nature by creating unique and amusing sculptures crafted from natural objects such as rocks and sticks that he collected. Nick was also an avid reader and had a fondness for listening to classical music.

Perhaps most telling of his character, Nick was always quick to laugh and found great joy in children, animals, nature and the everyday moments of life. He had a special ability to find wonder in the world and to share that sense of awe with those around him. His memory will be treasured in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his influence will continue to be felt through the lives of his family and the countless memories he created.

The Nicolay family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all who have shared in Nick's journey. His spirit, laughter and love will be dearly missed, but the memories he created will forever be a source of comfort and happiness for his loved ones.

According to his wishes and his love of simplicity, there will be no visitation or formal memorial service. The family encourages those who wish to honor his memory to please make a gift to one of his favorite charities, Topeka Rescue Mission (www.trmonline.org) or to the charity of their choice.
