Robert Duane Prater (Bob), 64, of Topeka, KS, passed away at the Midland Hospice House on May 24, 2024. Bob is preceded in death by his father, Robert Prater, his mother, Ardyce Prater, and a sister, Elisha Prater—Reavis. Bob is survived by his brother, Jim (Sheri); his sister, Roslyn McHenry (Bryce); and brother, Ben (Chanda). Bob will be missed by his nieces, nephews, and other loving extended family, as well as the residents and staff at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.
Bob was a fixture on the ball fields of Topeka Parks and Recreation for approximately 35 years, keeping score. Rain, shine, heat, or cold, Bob could be counted upon to show up for this essential yet unheralded job.
Bob began his college education at Northern Oklahoma University, where he obtained an associate degree. When the family returned to Topeka in 1978, Bob was employed by Southwestern Bell as a computer operator. He returned to school well into his thirties and obtained a bachelor's degree in computer science from Washburn University. He then worked at the Prairie Band Casino and Dillon's in Topeka. Bob moved to Aldersgate Village in 2015 and was able to live on the same floor as his mother, Ardyce, for four years. Bob was loved by both the staff and residents at Aldersgate. Several of his caretakers commented on how much they would miss him. Bob called the weekly bingo games for several years and thoroughly enjoyed the lunch outings.
The last couple of years were challenging for Bob, yet he never complained. The nurses and physicians caring for him communicated this to the family. Bob's positive attitude is a trait we can all strive to live by.
