Richard "Rick" L. Thompson

January 17, 1959 — April 3, 2023

Richard Lee Thompson, AKA: Big Guy, also known to all as Rick, passed away on April 3, 2023, in Topeka, Kansas, due to liver failure. Born on January 17, 1959, in Bermuda.

Rick was a friendly, sarcastic, and ornery guy who was loved by so many. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen, and children, Adam (Angela) Thompson of Derby, Kansas, Greg Pagett of Council Bluffs, IA, Pamela Thompson, Sarah (Ron) Schooler, and Rachel (Jon) Soden - all of Topeka. His brothers Tom (Shirley)Thompson, Duane Thompson, and sister Deborah Damon (Family) and last but not least, his dog Bella. Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Thompson, father Robert Thompson, and great-grandson Logan.

He was a proud and loving grandfather to many grandchildren. He has numerous nieces and nephews who he cherished - many are in Omaha, and he loved to talk to them as often as he could. He enjoyed watching them grow up and have their own families. Rick was a lifelong gamer who found joy and camaraderie in the virtual worlds he explored. He was always eager to share his passion for gaming with his children and grandchildren, creating lasting memories and teaching valuable lessons in strategy, teamwork, and perseverance. Family time was of utmost importance to Rick, and he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. He was a supportive husband, father, and grandfather who encouraged his family to pursue their dreams and never give up.

A quote that Rick often shared with his family, "Over the lips, through the gums, look out stomach, here it comes." at each holiday meal. Those who knew Rick knew that he loved to read, watch movies, and go fishing with his family. He loved to watch football and cheer on the KC Chiefs. He shared his love of sports with his kids and grandkids. He loved to share stories of his adventures on the road and sharing stories about family fun times. As we say our final goodbyes to Rick, let us remember the love, laughter, and wisdom he brought into our lives. May we honor his memory by living our own lives with the same passion, faith, and love that he so generously shared with us.

In lieu of flowers, please perform a random act of kindness in Rick's memory. At this time, there are no plans for a service at Rick's request. Rest in peace, Big Guy.
