Rachel Scott

June 18, 1953 — January 24, 2025

Rachel was born to Dr. William and Sara Hummel on June 18, 1953. The youngest of five, she has been proceeded in death by her parents, her brother Steve Hummel, and sister Kay Hummel-Nesbitt. So many friends and loved ones are gone. Some are remembered by their gift of generational love. Rachel is survived by her sister Sara Ekart (and husband Don), Ruth Abbott (and husband Tom), and the surviving spouses of Steve - Karen Hummel, and Kay - Allen Hummel-Nesbitt. She has loving, brilliant, and wonderful nieces and nephews from Maine to California. Rachel grew up in Manhattan, Kansas, in the '50s, '60s, and '70s. With older siblings having established the Hummel name, Rachel was everyone's friend. That never changed.

Rachel was a proponent of the School of Natural Consequences. She was always very precise in explaining how what you had done had gotten you to where you are. Rachel and her first husband, Mike Frost, taught this lesson as house parents in several facilities serving delinquent youth in the '70s. Jessica Alexandria Frost was born to that union in 1973.

Rachel (and Jessica) married David Scott on January 23,1981, in Miami, OK. David's career in social services management led them around Kansas, settling in Topeka in 1987. Duncan Tyler was born in 1982, Stephen Isaac in 1983, and Adrian Edward in 1996. Her children were the focus of her life. She is survived by her husband David Scott, daughter Dr. Jessica Ditto of Cockeysville, MD, and sons Duncan Scott, Stephen Scott, and Adrian Scott, all of Topeka, as well as her amazing grandchildren, now ages 5 to 23.

Rachel loved music. She loved live, loud music. She would embarrass the girls she was supervising; her sons; and/or random concert goers by her rock n' roll behavior. She loved so many people. So many people love her. She will be so missed.

A celebration of Rachel's life will be held on June 18, 2025. Time and place to be announced.
