Norman Earl Dederick

Dec 18, 1934 — Oct 24, 2026

Topeka

Norman Earl Dederick, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and “Pop” great-grandfather, passed away peacefully in Topeka, Kansas, on October 24, 2026, at the age of 91.

Born in Ellsworth, Kansas, on December 18, 1934, to Norman and Thelma (Chase) Dederick, Norman grew up as an only child. His life was defined by dedication to his family, service to his country, and a wonderful, lifelong sense of humor. He was fundamentally silly at heart, always looking for a way to bring a smile or a lighthearted laugh to those around him—a joyful spark he kept right up until the very end.

Norman honorably served his country in the United States Army, earning the National Defense Service Medal and a Marksmanship Badge. Following his military service, he attended Kansas State University. A devoted Wildcats fan, some of his favorite moments were spent surrounded by family in the stands, cheering on K-State football.

He enjoyed a long and dedicated career with the Santa Fe Railway, where he spent his entire professional life. Known around the office as the “fuel tax guy,” his sharp mind served him equally well at home, where he loved working through challenging puzzles, keeping a close eye on the stock market and his tending to his garden.

On April 13, 1955, Norman was united in marriage in Oklahoma to the love of his life, Donna (Crowder) Dederick, who was also from Blue Rapids. They spent the next 68 years loving each other and building a life centered around family and shared joy until her passing.

Norman was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Donna; his parents, Norman and Thelma Dederick; and his son-in-law, Paul Figgs.

He is survived by his children: Kent Dederick and his wife Susie of Topeka, Kansas, and Teal Figgs of Fresno, California.

He leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love in his grandchildren: Brae Richards and her husband Keith, Shelby Simpson and her husband Brian, and Jake Figgs and his wife Hannah. He was also a proud and adoring great-grandfather to Charlotte, Evalyn, Elliot, Warren, Josephine, and Ella.

Norman’s quick wit, playful spirit, and unwavering devotion to his family will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
