Norman Eugene Aker, affectionately known as "Gene" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at Midland Hospice House on Sunday June 2, 2024. Gene's journey on this earth began on October 16, 1930, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Maurice Harvey and Laura Belle (Hunt) Aker.
Gene grew up in Topeka. He was a graduate of Topeka High School, furthering his education at Washburn University where he graduated in 1952 with a degree in English, and then at the UMKC Dental School, completing his dental degree in 1956.
Gene honorably served for six years in the Air Force Reserve, two years on active duty at Luke's Air Base in Glendale Arizona, a period of his life that instilled in him a sense of discipline and service that he carried into all his endeavors. Upon returning to Topeka, Gene established his dental practice in 1958 where he served the community with great care and skill for many years.
Gene's life was rich with the love of family. He leaves behind his beloved spouse of 72 years, Rita Marie (Murphy) Aker, and their children: John (Linda Borgren), Jane Young (Jerry), Mary, Martha Badger (Keith), and Joe. The legacy of his love and wisdom will live on through his 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Laura, an infant brother, his brother Jack and his grandson Noah Matthew Aker.
Gene was known for his passion for music. He played the saxophone with the same precision and dedication that he applied to his dental practice. In his younger years, Gene's musical talent shone as he played in jazz dance bands, a venture that helped him fund his college education. His love for music was a constant throughout his life, passing on his love of music to his children and grandchildren.
Gene was also an avid reader, always keen to explore different worlds through the pages of a book. The books in his library show his thirst for knowledge into every interest he had. A trait he shared generously with his family. He was a pilot, sailed his boat at the Yacht Club at Lake Shawnee, built two grandfather clocks, one for his home and one for a colleague. His prized possessions include the stereo he designed and built and his extensive LP collection including classical, jazz and big band music.
His family celebrates a life well-lived, a love for the simple pleasures of life, like a good book or the soothing sounds of a saxophone, a life that was, in every sense of the word, harmonious. Norman Eugene Aker, Gene to those who knew him best, was a melody that will resonate in our hearts forever.
A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with internment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
