Neil F. "Jay" Swander, Jr.

April 4, 1953 — April 5, 2024

Neil F. Swander, Jr., affectionately known as Jay, left this world on April 5, 2024, after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was born on April 4, 1953, in Salina, Kansas, and spent his final days surrounded by love in Manhattan, Kansas. Jay's 71 years were marked by a deep commitment to his family, a passion for his work, and a life rich with outdoor adventures and mechanical mastery.

Jay's heart belonged to his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Swander, and their children: Jessica Weiszbrod and her husband Shane, Ezra Swander and his wife Megan, JJ Swander, Jacob Swander, Jimmy Henton, and John Henton and his wife Stephanie. His legacy continues through his 16 grandchildren, who will miss their grandfather's boundless energy and the wisdom he shared. Also left to cherish his memory are his brother John Swander and his wife Jodi, his sister Linda Voyles, and his mother Mary Swander. Jay was preceded in death by his father, Neil F. Swander Sr, and his brother, Jack Swander.

Professionally, Jay was a master mechanic and a respected Sheet Metal Worker. His hands, always ready to work, repaired and crafted with a precision and care that earned him the admiration of his colleagues. Jay's involvement in associations related to his trade was a testament to his dedication and love for his craft.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Jay lived for the outdoors. Hunting and fishing with his friends were among his favorite pastimes, moments when he found peace and camaraderie in the heart of nature. He shared a special bond with his brother John, traveling together to fly-ins and car shows, where they reveled in the beauty of classic engineering and the thrill of flight. Jay's pride and joy were his '36 Ford hot rod and his collection of motorcycles, as well as the antique airplane he took to the skies.

Jay's generosity knew no bounds. He was the friend who was always there, the first to offer a helping hand. There wasn't a thing he couldn't fix, and he did so with a smile, knowing that he was making someone's day a little easier. His ability to solve problems was only matched by his eagerness to teach others, passing on his knowledge to anyone willing to learn.

Gardening was another of Jay's passions, a pastime he approached with the same patience and care as his mechanical projects. His gardens were a source of joy and sustenance, reflecting his understanding of life's delicate balance. But above all, Jay cherished the moments spent with his children and grandchildren. He delighted in their growth and celebrated their successes as if they were his own.

Jay's life was a testament to the power of love, skill, and dedication. His story is not just one of personal achievement, but of the many lives he touched with his kindness and his talents. He leaves behind a community enriched by his presence and a family fortified by his love.

As we say goodbye to Jay, we take comfort in the knowledge that his spirit lives on through his family, his work, and the countless memories he created with those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a beacon of strength and a source of inspiration, and though he has taken his final flight, his legacy will continue to soar in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

Neil F. Swander, Jr. will be deeply missed, but the impact of his time on this earth will be felt for generations to come. His was a life well-lived, full of passion, purpose, and the love of a family united in remembrance of a remarkable man.
