Muriel M. Smith

January 15, 1931 — November 18, 2018

Muriel M. Smith, 87, passed away November 18, 2018 in Topeka, Kansas.

Muriel was born January 15, 1931 in Clinton, Iowa to Mildred and Charles McCoy, and as a young child, moved to Davenport, Iowa. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1949. She received her B.S. degree in Pharmacy from the University of Iowa in 1953. Muriel was a trailblazer in her field at a time when few women had careers. She and Herb owned and operated Smith Drugstore in Davenport, and later in Colorado Springs, they opened a pharmacy in a medical center. She finished her career working at Evans Army Hospital at Ft. Carson, Colorado.

On August 18, 1951, Muriel married the love of her life, Herb Smith, who passed away October 2, 2018. They lived in Iowa until 1973, when they moved to Colorado Springs. In 2008, they moved to Topeka to be closer to family.

Muriel had many passions. She was a phenomenal cook; a fanatical Denver Broncos fan, and enjoyed reading, gardening, shopping, games, cards, and puzzles of all kinds. She loved animals, and had either a dog or cat (or several) her entire life. Most of all, she loved her family, and especially adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Muriel is predeceased by her husband and her parents.

She is survived by her daughters, Debi (Tom) Stiles, Topeka, KS; Diane Thompson, Charlotte, NC, and Sheri (Mike) Scott, Fort Mill, SC; six grandchildren, Jeff (Cyndi) Stiles, Jenni (Trevor) Holland, Greg (Ashlynn) Stiles, Valerie Scott, David (Tina) Scott, and Kyle (Kristen) Thompson, five great-grandchildren, Logan, Kinsleigh, Brynlee, Addie, and Lillie, with Aria due to arrive in December, and a brother, Bob (Pat) McCoy, several nieces and nephews, and her beloved cat, Ginger.

Muriel was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Topeka. A memorial service will be held at a later time in Davenport, Iowa, where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband.

Midwest Cremation Society is assisting the family with arrangements. The family would like to thank Brewster Place for their loving care of Muriel.
