Michael Wayne Hughes, known as Mike to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at his home on December 29, 2023, in Topeka, Kansas.
Born in Ottawa, Kansas, on April 26, 1956, Mike grew up on his father's farm in Ottawa, where he developed a love for the outdoors and a knack for fixing anything that needed repair. He carried this handyman spirit throughout his life, always eager to lend a hand or share his skills. Mike was a high school graduate whose work ethic and friendly demeanor were well-known in his community. His heart was truly in his work, and he was happiest when he was tinkering, repairing, and creating.
Mike was devoted to reuniting with his kids. He leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly: his sons, Eric Florez and Michael Hughes Jr.; his daughters, Danielle Yanez, Nakia Florez, Angela Hughes, and Amy Hughes; and numerous grandchildren who brought him immense joy, along with the joyful anticipation of a new great grandbaby. His sisters, Linda Demler, Kathie Hughes, Barbara Hughes, Connie Hughes, Donna St.Clair; and his brother, Dale Hughes, along with many nieces and nephews, will remember him fondly for his endless stories and jokes. His fur baby, Chico, will surely miss his loving companionship.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Warren, and Louise Hughes; his brother, Donald Hughes; his grandson, Javier R. Banuelos; and his fur baby, Trigger.
Mike's life was one of connection and laughter. He never met a stranger, only friends he hadn't yet made. His ability to engage anyone in conversation, often talking their ear off if they let him. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life. A man of many interests Mike's youthful days on the farm sparked a lifelong love for outdoors he carried the values of hard work dedication throughout his life. His sense of humor and ability to find humor in everyday situations made him not only a joy to be around but also a pillar of strength during challenging times. To describe Mike as friendly and handy is an understatement. Mike's humor his stories and his willingness to help others will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
As we say farewell Michael Wayne Hughes He will be remembered as a man with a heart of gold. Though he has left this earth his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Rest in peace dear Mike, your memory will live on forever in our hearts.
Cremation is planned. The family does not plan on having a memorial service at this time. They would like to fulfill Mike's wishes of spreading his ashes on his daddy's farm
