Mathew Lynn Rakestraw, known fondly as Matt, passed away at Midland Hospice, in Topeka, Kansas on November 1, 2023, from Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was 69 years old. Born on August 7, 1954, in Henderson, Kentucky, Matt was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. His life was marked by an exceptional ability to build and fix anything, a sharp intellect, a great sense of humor, and a deep devotion to his family.
Matt attended Silver Lake High School before furthering his education at Washburn University and Washburn Technical School. Matt worked in construction, specializing in interior trim, after an eight-year stint at Goodyear. Armed with an HVAC certificate, he embarked on a career that showcased his practical skills and problem-solving abilities. He later found his niche at Jostens Publishing, where he served as a Maintenance/HVAC Specialist until his retirement in February 2013. His colleagues will remember him as a dedicated, capable professional with a straight-forward communication style who could always be relied upon.
Outside of work, Matt embraced the outdoors and the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed camping trips and took great pride in maintaining his home. The tillable land he owned was his personal haven, where he loved to farm. The variety of animals on the Rakestraw Ranch were under his tender care, and he found great joy in nurturing them. Known for his love of beer, Matt was often entertaining in small gatherings, his laughter, sarcasm, and dry humor infectious.
The heart of his life was his family. Matt is survived by his loving wife, Kathi Mae (Charlsen) Rakestraw, his sons Jake Allen Cobler (Amanda) and Kyle Lynn Rakestraw, and his daughter Jonell Mae Cvetkovic. His love for his grandchildren - Kai, Liam, and River Cobler; Naomi, Marko, and Stefan Cvetkovic; and Brycen Beaman - knew no bounds. He is also survived by his brothers, Ken and Jeff Rakestraw, and sisters-in-law, Ethlene and Rhea Rakestraw, along with countless nieces, nephews, and their children. Matt was preceded in death by his parents, Harris and Elwanda Rakestraw, and his brothers, Harris Rakestraw Jr., Ira Rakestraw, and Seth Rakestraw.
Remembered for his intelligence, humor, and handyman skills, Matt's legacy is one of love, laughter, and hard work. He has left an indelible mark on those privileged to have known him. His memory will be cherished, and his lessons passed down through generations. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life well-lived, a man well-loved, and a spirit that will continue to live on in those he left behind. Rest in peace, Mathew Lynn Rakestraw, your life was a blessing to us all.
