Mary Kathryn Johnson, known lovingly as Mary, passed away peacefully from natural causes on July 24, 2023, in Topeka, Kansas. She was born on August 20, 1927, in Wellington, Kansas, and lived a rich and fulfilling life of 96 years. With her passing, we remember and honor a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication to her family and community.
Mary was the beloved wife of the late LeRoy M. Johnson, and together they built a family that she cherished above all else. She was a devoted mother to her children, Mark R. Johnson and Diana K. Baker, and a doting grandmother to Crystal D. Baker-Mayer, Benjamin Baker, Randall D. Johnson, and Marla L. Johnson. Mary was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, who all brought her immense joy and pride.
A proud graduate of Topeka High School, Mary continued her education at Washburn University, where she nurtured her love for learning. Her dedication and hard work led her to a fulfilling career as a secretary with the Topeka Public School system. In her professional life, she was known for her diligence, commitment, and the positive impact she had on the lives of all the students she encountered.
Mary was a woman of many interests and talents, but her passion for gardening, quilting, and tracing her family ancestry stood out. Her gardens were a testament to her patience and nurturing nature, blooming with vibrant colors and exquisite beauty. Her quilts, often gifted to family and friends, were intricately designed and crafted, each a testament to her artistic abilities and her generous heart. Her interest in family ancestry was driven by her deep love for her family and her desire to understand and preserve their history.
Those who knew Mary would describe her as funny, loving, and selfless. Her infectious laughter brightened every room she entered, and her love for her family and friends was boundless. She was selfless in every sense of the word, always putting the needs of others before her own. Her kindness and compassion touched countless lives, and her memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.
