Margaret June Bennight Strawn Deitz, cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2024, in Overbrook, Kansas, at the age of 90. She was born on August 13, 1934, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Lillie Viola (Steadman) and James Miller Bennight.
Margaret's early years in Texas were marked by a strong sense of community and family values. She graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1952. On June 27, 1952, she married Charles Fred Strawn and embraced motherhood wholeheartedly, bringing six beautiful children into the world. Her marriage to Charles ended in 1971, and she later remarried.
Margaret's life was rich and diverse. As a young mother she was active with both Boy and Girl Scouts, and the Church of Christ, contributing significantly to her community. Later, her long career in health care facilities touched many lives with her compassion and leadership. Margaret retired as the Director of Environmental Services at Saint James Place in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after holding management roles at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, and USAF Hospital Robins Air Force Base and Central State Hospital in Georgia. Her work was recognized through numerous awards for her unwavering commitment to excellence.
Beyond her professional achievements, Margaret's interests were a reflection of her love for life and learning. She instilled the importance of education and work ethic in her children. Her love for travel took her and her family on numerous adventures, creating memories that would last a lifetime. She found joy in the companionship of animals of all kinds.
Margaret's culinary skills were legendary, bringing family and friends together around her table for seven decades. She was equally adept with a paintbrush or tending to her garden. She had a profound appreciation for the Earth, which was evident in her beautiful paintings and the care she took in cultivating her garden.
Margaret is survived by her children, Mary Elkins (Nick), James Strawn (Kim), Elizabeth Strawn, Linda Melancon (Betty), and Joel Strawn; grandchildren Michael, Jennifer, Charles, Wesley, Sara, Aysha, Luke, James, Mike, Brad, and Nicky; great-grandchildren; and friend Barb Moreland, who walked her home.
Margaret's strength and unwavering spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. We celebrate a life lived with purpose, love, and an enduring commitment to the well-being of others.
