Linda M. Cookson

d. November 24, 2017

Linda M. Cookson, 73, passed away at Olathe Health Hospice Center on Friday, November 24, 2017 while being comforted by lifelong friends following a stroke.

Linda was born, in Emporia, KS, to Fred and Mary (Bennett) Cookson who preceded he in death. She is survived by a wide circle of close friends some of whom she considered her "family of choice" and her loyal dog Raven.

Linda graduated from Emporia High School in 1962 and received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Kansas State Teachers College. She taught school for many years in Junction City, Emporia and Americus, KS. She loved her time in the classroom, teaching thirty plus years, to many students throughout her tenure. Some of her best stories are from her time in the classroom. In her earlier years, Linda spent some time working for the Forest Service out in Oregon.

After retiring from teaching, she spent her time working the election board, going to as many garage sales as possible where she would get the best deal for best price, and enjoying time with her many friends and "family of choice." Linda was known for her home of decorations, no matter the season or holiday her home was filled with decor celebrating those times. Christmas was her favorite time of year and her home definitely reflected that with a main tree at 7 feet tall with over 1,000 ornaments displayed, a teddy bear forest, Nutcrackers, Hallmark arches, antique tree, a tree top collection and so much more. Linda was also an avid collector of many things including teddy bears, nutcrackers, arrowheads, and Crayola memorabilia.

She will be missed by many. Per her wishes she was cremated and there will be a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Olathe Health Hospice Center, David Traylor Zoo or Emporia Animal Shelter.
