Topeka - Lester "Dale" Shirah, 71, passed away in his home on Monday, May 15, 2017 after a battle with cancer.
He served 4 years in the Navy from 1962-1966. After serving he returned home where he took a job as a truck driver with Whelans Lumber Co. and was a member of Teamsters for the majority of his career. He then took a position as a saw man at NPL before retiring at the age of 65.
His favorite pastimes were fishing and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years Darla (Dyche) Shirah, his daughter Stacey Dechand (David) of Topeka, 4 grandchildren Alicia Nesbitt (Jeremy) of Belvue, KS, Briar, MaKenna and Reilyn Dechand all of Topeka, Step-father also of Topeka Merrill Sheldon, many nieces and nephews and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother Elba "Helen" Sheldon and a sister Elba Berwert both of Topeka.
Per his wishes he will be cremated with no services to follow. There will be a Celebration of Life with family and friends at a later date.
