Lawrence G. Petry, 83, of Topeka passed away June 4, 2022. He was born August 6, 1938, in Council Bluff, IA the son of Merle and Lucille (Ruby) Petry. Lawrence served in Iowa Army National Guard from May 17, 1956, until he was honorably discharged on May 16, 1959. He was a home builder in Elliott, IA for many years. He also was a Semi-Truck driver for 14 years. But his true passion was carpentry, he was a professional carpenter working for Local #1445 in Topeka where he also taught the craft of carpentry to apprentices as well as journeymen. When he wasn't working, he spent his spare time Bass Fishing, boating, camping, playing golf and was antique car enthusiast. Lawrence won several awards for his cars and his work on restoring relics back to their original condition. He married Janet Andrews in 1956, they later divorced, but from that union had three children, Joy, Scott and Byron. He later married Sheryl A. (Bloom) Castle on January 9, 1989. She survives. Other survivors include his three children Joy Tunnell, Scott Petry and Byron (Julie) Petry, four stepchildren, Leah Ralston, Linda (Grant) Urton, Jason Castle and Albert Castle. Four grandchildren, Ryan (Lela) Tunnell, Lauren Tunnell, Lace (Aaron) Sindt, Erin (Logan) Ellis and two great-grandchildren Kenneth Tunnell and Taelyn Ellis. Seven step-grandchildren, Nakita (Joshua) Crump, Kaylee (Justin) Phillips, Morgan (Caleb) Garber, Bethany (Timmy) Riley, Mack Pagel, Jason Michael (AnnMarie) Castle, Jessica Castle and sixteen step great-grandchildren, Allison, Corbin, Arizona, Sophia, Emilya, Aliver, Deliah, Owen, Maverick, Abigael, Selena, Zach, Hunter, Brayden, Jaxson, Shelby and two on the way. A come and go visitation to celebrate Larry's life will be held Friday, June 10th from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the First Baptist Church, 3033 SW MacVicar Avenue, Topeka. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, July 18, 2022, at the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Council Bluff, IA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Baptist Church or Midland Care Hospice.
