Lawrence "Larry" Willard Hahn, Jr. was born and raised in Topeka, Kansas on February 24th, 1952. The only child born to Lawrence Willard Hahn, Sr. and Dorothea Dixon.
During his youth, Larry grew up on 631 Madison Street, then moved to 815 Strait Street in the Oakland neighborhood of Topeka, Kansas.
His education consisted of the following:
Lincoln Elementary
Lundgren School of Oakland
Holliday Junior High, where he was a member of the Varsity Football team and the Basketball team.
Highland Park High School, which did not last very long after an unexpected run in with his mother at a filling station, which ended in a transfer to Topeka High School, where he was a member of the Choir, the Boys Glee Club and an active Thespian. In fact, he had the role of "Conductor" in Topeka High's production of "Funny Girl." He graduated in 1970.
After graduation from Topeka High School, Larry walked into the Atchison Santa Fe Building ( now known as Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway) on 10th Street and Quincy in Topeka, Kansas to apply for a job. He took a standardized mathematics exam and just like that, got the job! He had a strong work ethic and was a favorite among the company. After 42 years of dedicated service, Larry retired from BNSF in March of 2012.
His hobbies and interests included traveling, outdoor activities, including camping, hunting, fishing, motorcycles, listening to live music and being with his family. He was also quite the athlete. He participated in the Hospital Hill half-marathon and numerous 5K and 10K runs. Most notably, he also participated in the Topeka Tinman of 1987, a triathlon. His final time was 2 hours and 17 minutes, beating the likes of college track teams!
After a short battle with hepatocellular carcinoma, Larry left us on the day of September 30th, 2023, shortly before 8 a.m. We will "live our life one day at a time", just like he taught us. Although Larry may no longer physically be present in our lives, his essence itself will forever remain alive in our hearts and memories and through us all, his honor will forever be defended!
He is survived by his wife, Dana Hahn, his 3 children, Windi (Corey Sr.) Thomas, Ian Hahn, Kara Hahn and his grandson, Corey Thomas, Jr.
Per Larry's request, there will be no service, however, if you would like to honor Larry with a monetary donation, please send to:
