Larry Dean Smith II, affectionately known by friends and family as Dean, passed away from cardiac arrest on June 24, 2024, at the age of 61 in Topeka, KS. Born on December 22, 1962, in Hutchinson, KS, to Larry Dean Smith I and the late Elizabeth Earlene Falter, Dean grew up to be a man of strong character, a loving husband, father, brother, and uncle.
Dean's life was marked by his steadfast dedication to his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Janet Smith, and two cherished daughters, Danielle and Megan Smith, who were the pride and joy of his life. His love and guidance also extended to his siblings Laurie Smith, Scott Smith and his wife Angie, Rhonda Shibley and her husband Bob, and Allen Smith. His father, Larry Dean Smith I, will sorely miss his son's presence. Dean was a treasured uncle to his 13 nieces and nephews and 19 great-nieces and nephews, and he shared a special bond with his brothers-in-law, Lonnie and Ronnie Morgan. His life was touched by the loss of his mother, sister Becky Smith, and niece Deanna Smith, who all preceded him in death.
As a man who valued hard work and community service, Dean spent many years as a taxi cab driver, where he was known for his friendly conversations and timely service. He also took pride in his role as a sanitation worker for Shawnee County Refuge, where he was respected by his colleagues for his reliability and strong work ethic. Despite completing his formal education at the 8th grade, Dean was a lifelong learner who took every opportunity to expand his knowledge and skills.
Beyond his professional life, Dean was a passionate WWE fan, a hobby that brought excitement and entertainment into his life. His collection of action figures was a testament to his love for the sport and its heroes. Dean was also a talented wood burner, creating beautiful art pieces that reflected his attention to detail and patience. His green thumb was evident in his well-tended garden, which not only brought beauty to his home but also served as a peaceful sanctuary for him.
Dean's life was a reflection of the things he valued most: family, hard work, and his personal interests. His presence was a source of stability and love for those who knew him. He approached life with a sense of humor, a ready smile, and an open heart. His passing leaves a void in the lives of many, but the memories he created will continue to bring comfort and joy to his loved ones.
The Smith family wishes to extend their gratitude to all those who shared in Dean's life. His impact on those around him was profound, and the legacy of his kindness and strength will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Dean will be laid to rest in a private ceremony, surrounded by those who loved him most. As the sun sets on a life well-lived, we bid farewell to a man who was much loved and who will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace, knowing that his life was a beacon of joy and love to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
