Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, teacher, mentor, friend Larry Alan Cammack, 84, of Topeka, Kansas died Monday, August 28, 2023, at his home. The family takes comfort in the hope of his reuniting in his heavenly home with loved ones that preceded him.
The family will greet friends from 10 - 10:30 am in the parlor of First Christian Church, Warrensburg, MO on September 15, 2023, followed by a celebration of his life at 11 am in the church sanctuary with the Revs Dale and Traci Matherly officiating. According to his wishes his ashes will be scattered. Donations may be made in his name to Phoenix Hospice, Topeka, KS; Topeka Rescue Mission; Topeka Harvesters; Topeka Salvation Army; the ALS Association; the University of Central Missouri Mathematics Department.
Larry was born August 7, 1939, in Marion, IN, the son of Osborn (Bud) Cammack and Betty Roseanna (Ivans) Cammack. At a young age the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He married Judith Banta on June 17, 1960. She survives.
Dr. Cammack had been a professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Central Missouri from 1972 until retirement in 2006. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from Phillips University, Enid, OK, Masters and Doctorate degrees from Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Topeka, KS. He enjoyed maintaining five acres of forest and plantings and birds in Warrensburg until moving to Topeka, KS in 2016 to live near family. Larry enjoyed his family most of all; competing in 26K runs; biking, swimming; traveling, fishing; his friends; card games; theology; history. He was a member of; the American Mathematical Society of America; the Sigma Chi Scientific Research Society; and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. He was a sponsor of Kappa Mu Epsilon on the University of Central Missouri campus. In 1979 he received a one-year National Science Foundation funded study leave sabbatical from the University to Cornell University, Ithaca, NY as a visiting professor.
Survivors include his wife Judy of the home; son Dr. Jon Cammack (wife Tess) of Bluffton, SC; daughters Janelle Martin and Laura Hopkins of Topeka, KS. Grandchildren Jonna Cammack,, Denver, CO; Taylor Cammack, (wife Jennifer), of Kansas City, KS; Kennan Armstrong (husband Dalton) of Liberty, MO; Ryan Castle (wife Maggie) of Denver, CO; Megan Lenneman, (husband Bryan) of Cambridge, MA; Logan Martin, Topeka, KS; Brooke Martin, Topeka, KS; Christina Estrada (Jeremy Helms) of Charlotte, NC; Evan Estrada, Charlotte, NC; Jaiden Estrada, Charlotte, NC; Freya Hopkins, Leesburg, VA; and ten great grandchildren with a November great granddaughter expected. Sisters Penny Davidson, Kansas City, MO; Sandy Arnone (husband Charlie) Kansas City, Mo; Roseann McDermott, Durango, CO; brother James Cammack, (wife Janet), Kansas City, MO; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Barry Cammack.
