Kelly Dean Johnson, 76, of Tecumseh, KS, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2022, at the University of Kansas Health System, St. Francis Campus.
He was born August 7, 1946, in New Ulm, MN, the son of Elmer and Rose (Albrecht) Johnson.
Kelly was a 1964 graduate of Seaman High School. After graduating, he was drafted by the United States Army. He served valiantly during the Vietnam War, earning the Combat Infantry Badge for his role in active ground combat. Upon receiving an Honorable Discharge, Kelly began his career working at General Foods, before retiring after 25 years of employment. He had a wonderful entrepreneurial spirit, owning and operating Thrifty Car Wash, in addition to becoming a commercial and residential real estate developer. He loved to have conversation with his customers any day of the week. Kelly also had a love for playing golf, fishing, and enjoying dessert with his family and friends.
Kelly was a member of Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion Post #400.
He married Sharon Kay Krier on May 24, 1975, at Assumption Catholic Church. She survives. Other survivors include two sons and their families, Luke Johnson, his wife, Alicia, along with their three children, Shipley, London and Morgan; Tyler Johnson, his wife, Brandy, along with their two children, Brooke, and Parker. Two sisters, LaDonna Hutchinson and her husband, Tom, and Jeannie Richardson and her husband, Bob, also survive.
Cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Saturday, September 17, 2022, at Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church. Burial of his urn will follow at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Meriden, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial donations be made in Kelly's memory for Masses to Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church, 2014 NW 46th Street, Topeka, KS 66618, or to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675-8517. Burial of his urn will follow mass with Military Honors being provided my the Army National Guard Funeral Detail assisted by American Legion Post #421, Topeka.
