Karen Sandberg

December 16, 1948 — July 6, 2025

Karen Sandberg, 76, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025, in Topeka, KS. Born in Coffeyville, KS on December 16, 1948, Karen lived a life full of love, resilience, and just the right amount of sass.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry Sandberg; her parents, Ike and Frances Adams; and her brother, Ken Adams. She is survived by her children Michelle Shipley (Mike), David Schoonover, Lisa Nutt (Dwayne) and Randy Sandberg (Brnda). She also leaves behind her cherished sister, Kay Dykes (Barry).

Karen was a devoted Nana to her grandchildren Meagan King (Jake), Tori Bentley (Zach), Mallory Misenhelter (Garrett), Gretchen Shipley, Camryn Schoonover, Seth Nutt (Kirbie), Caleb Nutt (Taylor), Ashlyn Broce (Trent), Shae Sandberg (Cheyenne), Lasey Sandberg (Logan Dean) as well as her great-grandchildren, Logan, Landon, Raelynn and Sadie King; Julius and Lylah Bentley; Brady and Kennedy Misenhelter, Korbyn, Kruz, Karter Howard and Gigi Nutt, Rynlee Broce, McCoy Nutt, and Creed Sandberg. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the lights of her life—and possibly the only people allowed to make a mess in her kitchen without consequences.

Karen wore many hats in her life, holding a variety of jobs before following her calling into respiratory therapy. After graduating from Labette Community College, she worked for many years at St. John's Hospital in Joplin, Missouri. Her strength and compassion were especially evident during and after the 2011 tornado, where she not only survived but helped care for patients during the hospital's recovery. Her coworkers became lifelong friends, and her care touched many lives.

At home, Karen found joy in baking, gardening, and keeping her yard in perfect shape. Her famous frosted sugar cookies were a favorite of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Larry could often be found enjoying an afternoon out at the casinos—though she'd say the real jackpot was time spent with family. Her greatest passion was being a Nana, and she never missed a chance to spoil her grandkids in person or from afar.

Karen's legacy is one of fierce love, quiet strength, and a generous spirit. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were lucky enough to know her.

A celebration of life is currently being planned for mid-late August in the Pittsburg area. Details will be shared on facebook when finalized.
