Judy Ann Sorell-Katz, affectionately known as Judy, passed away on June 11, 2023, at the age of 66 in Manhattan, KS, after a fierce battle with leukemia. She was born on April 14, 1957, in Concordia, KS, and spent her entire life enjoying family, friends and work.
Judy was the life of the party, and her family, friends, and even strangers felt the warmth of her loving, funny, and courageous spirit. She is survived by her siblings, Marilyn Thoman, Gerald Sorell, Randy Sorell, and Janet Sorell-Hall, and her children, Angie Sorell (Victor Ortiz), Courtney Metcalf (Kyle Metcalf), and Andrew Sorell (Jill Stauffer). Judy was also the proud and doting grandmother to Dalton Schwab, Kate Richardson, Gabriel Mercado, Emerie Metcalf, Maddox Metcalf, Dean Sorell, and Aleesia Sorell. A proud graduate of Concordia High School, Judy went on to become the manager at Beer Goggles in Manhattan, Kansas, for 13 years. She not only ran the place with skill and efficiency, but she also made sure everyone who walked through the doors felt welcomed and entertained. Some might say she was the unofficial mayor of Beer Goggles, making friends with everyone who came in and ensuring they left with a smile on their face and a story to tell.
In her free time, Judy loved nothing more than spending time with her grandkids, teaching them the art of rolling dice and playing cards. She was a gambling enthusiast, never shying away from a friendly game of chance. Her family often joked that if there was a casino in heaven, Judy would be the first in line to try her luck. And, of course, she would always share her winnings with those she loved.
Judy's sense of humor was legendary, and she could always be counted on to make people laugh. Whether it was through a well-timed joke or a hilarious story, Judy's comedic timing was impeccable. Her friends and family will always cherish the laughter she brought into their lives.
In the face of adversity, Judy showed immense courage and resilience. Her battle with leukemia was no exception, as she fought with determination and grace, never losing her sense of humor or her love for life. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of those she touched.
So, as we say goodbye to Judy Ann Sorell-Katz, let us raise a glass in her honor and remember the loving, funny, and courageous woman who brought so much joy and laughter into our lives.
