John D. Troth, 89, of Dover, KS, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2023, at his home surrounded by family.
He was born on September 10, 1933, to Millard and Mabel Troth in Valley Falls, KS.
John attended high school in Horton, KS. In 1949, John enlisted in the Army National Guard of Kansas where he spent 3 years. He was a Field Artillery Corporal. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He graduated from Horton High School in 1952.
He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Thornbrugh, on May 22, 1953, and they had 3 children, Rodney, Michael, and Brad.
He was very experienced in woodworking and carpentry. He started as a part-time apprentice carpenter from 1946-1952. He then worked construction on the Tuttle Creek Dam in 1952 with George Bennett Construction Company. In 1953 he worked for the Sunflower Ordinance Works in Desoto, KS. From 1953-1954 he worked as a cabinet maker for Neider Wood Works in Lawrence, KS. He then worked at Highland Mill Shop in Topeka, KS as a cabinet maker from 1954-1971. John became a self-employed General Contractor doing remodeling from 1971-1989. In 1989, he worked at Custom Wood Products customizing kitchens and cabinets and retired from there in 2007.
John raced motorcycles in the 1960's and won many of his races. He was also an avid quail and turkey hunter and fisherman. He used his woodworking skills to build his home in Dover, make furniture, and other creative art pieces.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Troth, brother, Don Troth, and his sons Rodney, Michael, and Brad Troth. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his father, Millard Troth, mother Mable McCullum and stepfather Homer McCollum.
A graveside Memorial Service for family and friends will be held for both Ruth and John Troth on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Dover Cemetery at 10:30 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life luncheon at their home from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM.
