John Earl Lawson, known affectionately to friends and family as Johnny, passed away in Topeka, KS, on the evening of July 04, 2024, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born on June 29, 1951, in Webb City, MO, Johnny's warmth and vivacity left an indelible mark on the hearts of those he encountered throughout his 73 years.
Johnny's early life in Webb City set the foundation for a man who valued community, resilience, and service. In 1971, at the age of 20, he enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country for five years. His time in the military was a testament to his strength and dedication, traits that he carried with him throughout his life. After his honorable discharge, Johnny continued to embody a spirit of service in his civilian life, eventually retiring in 2007 due to heart problems.
Family was the cornerstone of Johnny's life. He was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Tina Lawson, with whom he shared countless cherished memories. Their bond was a beacon of enduring love and partnership. Johnny was also a proud father to his son, Michael Lawson and his daughter, Heather Lawson. His role as a grandfather to Megan, Draven, Drake, and Stryker Grosfield brought him immeasurable joy. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, imparting wisdom and laughter in equal measure.
Johnny's interests were a reflection of his love for life and the great outdoors. An avid fisherman, he found solace and excitement in the quiet rush of river waters and the thrill of a catch. His sense of adventure extended to traveling with Tina, where together they explored new places and created lasting memories. Johnny's love for the road was shared with his grandchildren, taking them on long trips that were filled with stories and songs, creating a legacy of cherished adventures.
One of Johnny's most treasured experiences was participating in the Kansas Honor Flight this past April. The trip, which honors veterans by taking them to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to their service, was a profound honor for Johnny. It was an experience he spoke of with great pride and reverence, leaving an indelible impression on his heart.
Those who knew Johnny would describe him as loving, friendly, and funny. His laughter was infectious, his smile could light up a room, and his kindness knew no bounds. Johnny's sense of humor brought levity to any situation, and his presence was a source of comfort to those around him. He had the remarkable ability to forge lasting friendships and to make every person he met feel valued and important.
Johnny's life was a tablet of love, service, and joy. His legacy will live on in the stories told by his family, the laughter shared among friends, and the gentle ripple of a fishing line cast on a serene morning. Though he has left this earthly realm, the memories he created will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know him.
The family of John Earl Lawson wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the love and support shown during this time of loss. Johnny will be deeply missed, but the light of his spirit will forever shine brightly in the lives of those he touched.
