John Allen Cummings, born February 11, 1941, passed into heavenly eternity on July 23, 2016, in Topeka, Kansas. John was born to John Francis Cummings, Jr., and Anna Mae Hooper Cummings, in a house right up the street from the original Cummings' homestead in North Shawnee County. Both of his parents predeceased him
On December 19, 1975, John married the love of his life, Sandra Sue Young, of the home, and together they raised two daughters, Traci Cummings and Holly Joy, both of Ardmore, Oklahoma. They survive. Others survivors include his son-in-law, Tracy Joy, and his four grandchildren, Christian Allen Joy, Hanah Ellane Joy, Robert Dean Joy, and James Lee John Cummings, all of Ardmore, Oklahoma. Also surviving him were one brother-in-law, Danny Holly and wife, Sandy, sister-in-law, Shirley Young, and special cousins who were also his close friends, Mel and Kitty Craver and Dick and Cookie Guilfoil. John had a special place in his heart for all his family, including all generations from the oldest to the youngest. One of his most enjoyable things was going to sport events of the younger generations in his family.
To say that John loved life is not a strong enough statement. He was an avid fisherman and spent the past nine years traveling with Sandra to many lakes in Oklahoma and Texas so they could enjoy retirement together doing what they loved.
The joy in John's life is credited to the fact that he loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. John knew the importance of living for God and made sure his family was taught what being a Christian meant. John was a man of few words, and spoke with a soft voice. He led his life by example. His contribution of time spent and work done in the early establishment of Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene in Topeka were testaments to this fact.
John was not a prideful man, but one of his proudest accomplishments was being a Veteran of the United States Army.
John was the absolute best husband, Dad, and Pappaw imaginable. He had a way of making each one of his grandchildren feel like they were the most special young person in the world. He had a nickname and unique routine with all four. He was a very special man and was loved by everyone who knew him. John will be unbelievably missed.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 28, at Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene. Cremation services are provided by Midwest Cremation Society, Inc.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene, Children's Building Fund, 3501 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka, KS 66614.
