John Alan Bradbury

John Alan Bradbury DVM (Brad), 96, died peacefully on May 8, 2019). Born September 9, 1922, in Coffeyville, Kansas, he was the son of Frank and Maude (Coverdale) Bradbury. Brad was an Eagle Scout who graduated from Field McKinley High School. He attended Coffeyville Community College and graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Veterinary Medicine.  He was a member of Blue Key and Beta Theta Phi Fraternity. In his senior year he was President of the Junior American Veterinary Medical Association. Brad was a First Lieutenant in the Veterinary Corps during WWII, serving in France, Austria and Germany.  On his return from Europe, he was a USDA meat inspector for Armour Meat Packing Co. and practiced veterinary medicine in Kansas City, MO.  In 1948, he married Rosemary Atzenweiler, moved to Topeka, KS, and established the Gage Boulevard Animal Hospital, providing veterinary service for Topeka until his retirement in 1985.

He was appointed to The Kansas State Board of Health by Governor George Docking. He was a longtime member of St. David's Episcopal Church and Topeka Country Club.

Brad was a sportsman who loved the outdoors. He enjoyed downhill skiing and was a charter member of the Topeka Ski Club. He also enjoyed horseback riding and was an early member of the Topeka Round-Up Club. He spent many hours on his grandfather's ranch in Oklahoma and experienced the beauty of the Flint Hills on horseback.  He liked boating and water skiing, and he loved to play golf. He shared all of these outdoor activities with his family.

Brad was preceded in death by his wife Rosemary. He is survived by his three children, Marsha, Steve (Nicki) and Dana, five grandchildren Mitchell (Julia), Megan (Eric), Christopher, Ashley (Austin), and Madison, five great grandchildren and is expecting a sixth.

Memorial services will be held at St. David's Episcopal Church in Topeka, on Thursday, May 16th at 10:30 am. Visitation with the family and refreshments will be provided at the church after the service. Private internment will be in St. David's courtyard and the family plot in Coffeyville. KS.
