James Andrew Hemmer, 50, of Topeka, KS died on March 5, 2017 at Stormont-Vail HealthCare after a long struggle with Celiac disease. He was born in Seattle, WA on July 15, 1966 to Norman and Jo Ann Hemmer.
Jimmy had Down syndrome. He never knew a stranger and always had a smile on his face and a hug for everyone he met. He was baptized in the Episcopal Church and attended University United Methodist Church in Topeka, KS.
He was under the care of Sunflower Supports where he lived with two men, J.J. and John, with 24-hour supervision. Jimmy loved to draw, help others and had fun teasing people. Jimmy was a long time employee with TARC working in various community jobs including the National Guard Armory.
Jimmy is survived by his parents, brothers Joe (Theresa) Hemmer of Topeka, KS; Tom (Cathie) Hemmer of Nebraska City, NE and sister Jerri (Terry) Leech of Nebraska City, NE and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Jimmy is preceded in death by his grandparents, Francis and Cecelia Hemmer and William and Esther Meili, 3 aunts and 8 uncles.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 11 at Sunflower Supports, 2521 SW 37th St. Topeka, KS 66611, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Memorial contributions can be made in person or mailed to Topeka Community Foundation for Sunflower Supports at the above address.
