James Douglas Runnels

September 15, 1947 — December 3, 2024

James Douglas Runnels, known fondly as Jim to his friends and family, passed away peacefully in Topeka, Kansas, on December 3, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on September 15, 1947, in Wautoma, Wisconsin, to Dorm and Irma Runnels, he was a man of integrity and warmth, whose presence uplifted those around him.

Jim proudly served his country as a member of the US Army, a period of his life that instilled in him a profound sense of duty and honor. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful career in the optical industry, where his meticulous work and amiable nature earned him the respect and friendship of colleagues and clients alike.

At home, Jim's heart belonged to his beloved wife Christina, with whom he shared a life rich in love and mutual respect. He is survived by stepsons, Jason (Mindee) Fuller and Garrett Harris along with his brother Gerald (Gail) Runnels, and sisters Kathryn (John) Schlice and Carol (Tom) Eckels. Eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dorm and Irma.

Jim's joy for life extended to the great outdoors, where he could often be found with a fishing rod in hand or perfecting his aim in sporting clays. Hunting was not just a hobby but a passion that allowed him to connect with nature and foster lifelong friendships. His love for these pursuits was infectious, and he was always ready to share a story or two about his latest adventure.

Those who knew Jim would describe him as kind, loving, and selfless. He had an innate ability to make people feel valued, a quality that drew others to him. His selflessness was evident in every aspect of his life, from his dedication to his family to the way he conducted himself in his profession and personal endeavors.

Jim's passing leaves a void in the lives of those he touched, but his spirit will live on in the memories that are treasured by his family and friends. His gentle smile, hearty laugh, and the wisdom he imparted will be sorely missed, but the impact of his love and kindness will endure.

As we say farewell to Jim Douglas Runnels, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with purpose, joy, and an abundance of love. His story does not end with his passing but continues in the lives of those he has left behind, who will strive to honor his memory by embodying the virtues he exemplified so effortlessly.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Jim, you were a beacon of light in the lives of many, and your legacy will continue to shine bright. Rest in peace, dear husband, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Your memory will be forever etched in our hearts.
