James Leland DeSelms, affectionately known as Jim to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2024, at his rural home in Topeka, KS. Born on September 13, 1948, in Wichita, KS, Jim's life was marked by his creativity, wisdom, and loving nature. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, artistry, and education that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Deborah Reiling DeSelms; his sons, Jacob DeSelms (Veronica Noonan DeSelms, granddaughter, Clara Rose) and Zach DeSelms (Jessi Snook) his sister, Artis (Bob) Stoebener and a community of friends and former students whose lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey. His family remembers him as a constant source of love and support.
Jim was an Eagle scout, Navy veteran, and Civil War reenactor. After graduating from Emporia State University, Jim dedicated thirty years to teaching art and history, fostering a love for learning and creativity in his students. His passion for art extended beyond the classroom as the proud owner of the Walking Turtle Studio and Art Gallery, where he not only showcased his work but also served as a mentor to aspiring artists.
Jim's interests were as vast and colorful as his personality. He could often be found engaging in lively discussions, or as he called it, "shooting the breeze," and he possessed an innate ability to bring life to any conversation. A tinkerer at heart, Jim was always immersed in various art projects, each a testament to his inventive spirit.
Those who knew Jim would describe him as a creative soul, a wise confidant, and a loving presence in their lives. His guidance was sought after by many, and his advice was given with a gentle kindness that resonated deeply with those fortunate enough to receive it.
A quote that Jim often shared encapsulates his philosophy on life: "It takes a hell of a canary to weigh a ton" -FDR (probably). This sentiment mirrored Jim's approach to life's challenges—always seeking the silver lining and encouraging others to do the same.
Jim's impact on the world was as profound as the art he created and the history he taught. His legacy will be cherished and carried on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were graced by his presence. As we bid farewell to Jim, we take solace in knowing that his story does not end here; it lives on through the countless lives he enriched and the beauty he brought into this world.
James Leland DeSelms will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will forever be a source of joy and inspiration. As we reflect on his life, we are reminded to embrace the creativity, wisdom, and love that he exemplified every day. Rest in peace, Jim, you will be missed.
