Howard Wayne Blackmon

December 19, 1938 — November 4, 2025

Howard Wayne Blackmon, affectionately known as Howard, passed away on November 4, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on December 19, 1938, in Atchison, Kansas, Howard's life was marked by his unwavering kindness, wisdom, and love for his family and community.

Howard graduated from Atchison High School in 1956 and went on to further his education at Highland Junior College. His sense of duty led him to serve his country in the United States Army for three years, an experience that shaped much of his later life. After his honorable discharge, Howard embarked on a distinguished career with the United States Postal Service, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement in 1992 as the Manager of the General Mail Facility.

Beyond his professional achievements, Howard was a pillar in his community. His involvement with various youth organizations, unions, and fraternal organizations demonstrated his commitment to service and mentorship. Howard's passion for helping others continued into his retirement as he worked with Primeamerica Financial Services, where he shared his financial acumen and wisdom with those around him.

Howard's life was rich with love and laughter, shared with his beloved wife, Saundra Blackmon, and his cherished family. He was previously married to Lucinda Blackmon, they later divorced. He was a devoted father to Howard W. Blackmon Jr. (Barb), Lynne Austin (Frank), Alyson Stevenson, and David McFoxx (Shatara). His siblings, Kat Montgomery, Nedra Jones, Micheal Ann Beasley, and Kevin Blackmon, will remember him as the loving brother who always provided guidance and support. Howard was preceded in death by his brother Pete Blackmon and his children Kirk Blackmon and Sonya Adams. His brother-in-law, James Gilbert Sr., was like a brother to him, along with many other brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws sharing in the joys and sorrows of life.

Howard's legacy is also celebrated by his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride. His extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins will fondly recall his loving nature and the wisdom he imparted.

In times of reflection, Howard often found solace in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children... to leave the world a bit better... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Howard lived by these words, and indeed, he succeeded.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Howard Wayne Blackmon leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and wisdom that will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever be a beacon of light for his family and the many lives he touched.
