Harold Elmer Christ of Wamego, KS passed away peacefully, April 16, 2018, at the Homecare and Hospice in Manhattan, KS, surrounded by his five children and administered to by the Hospice Angels.
The son of Ernest H. and Louise Ockershausen Christ, Harold was born in Arlington, VA on July 14, 1922. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Belgium, France, and Germany for 3-1/2 years during WWII. He was a Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient for his service and sacrifice, and participated in many campaigns including Normandy Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. His service to his county continued after WWII as a United States government employee, retiring after 31 years of service. During his career, he resided overseas in Rome, Italy, Frankfurt, Germany and Taipei, Taiwan. His United States residences included, Arlington, VA, Marshall, VA, Eureka Springs, AR, Herington, KS and Wamego KS.
Harold lived a very full life, filled with spiritual and personal growth. He was a family man who always included his large family in his interests of U.S. and world travel, camping, natural and biological sciences, and farming. He gave of himself freely over the years providing missionary services and caregiving, expressing the love he had for his family and others. He sincerely believed in the power of love and how compassion and positive thoughts created a better reality for individuals and ultimately the world. He was ready and willing to share his wisdom and truths to help his family and friends, and his life was a testimony to those truths. Last moments with him were spent sitting and holding his hand, attempting to express the gratitude for the richness and love he brought into individual lives. It was no surprise that in his last days, his family and friends gathered around him creating a great aura of love that enveloped him and all those around.
Harold was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife, Mary Rose Joy Christ; his parents (Harold) Ernest H. and Louise O. Christ, his brothers: Ernest Crist (and wife, Helen) and Charles E. Christ; his sons: David W. Christ and Donald E. Christ. He is survived by his children: Susan L. McIntyre, Sheree M. Walsh, and Margaret L. Marshall of Wamego, KS; Betsy A. Smith and her husband Robert of Ardmore, TN; and John M. Christ and his wife, Leslie of Huntsville, AL; his sister-in-law, Jan Christ, several nephews and nieces, 12 grandchildren plus spouses, 40 great grandchildren plus spouses, and 24 great-great grandchildren, plus many more 'adopted' into his family. Each and every one was deeply loved by Harold.
Harold's remains were cremated; his life celebration will be announced and held at a later date.
