Gregory "Greg" Lynn Whitfield

June 14, 1950 — January 2, 2023

Gregory Lynn Whitfield (Greg), 72, of Valley Falls, Kansas passed away on January 2, 2023.

Greg was born June 14, 1950, in Salina, Kansas to J.D. and Zelma (Hogarty) Whitfield of Kansas City, KS.

After graduated from Washington High School (1968), Greg enlisted in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country for over 30 years. During his career with the Air Force, he worked in Security Police and helped develop the Airbase Ground Defense School where he was a lead instructor, reaching the rank of Senior Chief Master Sergeant. Later, he joined the Department of Defense and retired as a GS-12 Security Force Leader. After military retirement, Greg began working in Lansing, KS for the Department of Corrections, where he held the position of Correctional Officer and Union Representative for over 15 years.

In 2006, Greg met Debra Lutz at Helen's Hilltop Bar & Grill in Tonganoxie, KS. They married on September 23rd, 2007, and later moved to Valley Falls in 2015 and started the Whitfield ranch (which few people know that the TV series Yellowstone is based on).

Greg was an avid animal lover and brought home several stray cats. He enjoyed raising and riding horses, hunting, target shooting, supporting the grandkids' sporting events and watching black and white movies of yesteryear. He loved spending time outdoors (no matter the weather), teaching his grandchildren and anyone else that would listen about the outdoors, shooting guns, hunting, and, of course, the military. The time he spent with family and friends was always packed with stories and many, many jokes.

Greg was preceded in death by his mother and father, J.D & Zelma Whitfield.

He is survived by his wife and goddess, Debbie, sons, Micheal G. of Kansas City, MO and Daniel (Maria) of Kansas City, KS; stepson, Scott (Nicole) Lutz of Topeka, KS; brother, Michael J. (Marsha) of Kansas City, KS; brother-in-law, Daniel Fields of Topeka, KS; and grandchildren, Danielle, Ashley, Reilly, Cheyenne, McKayla and Billy.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1pm – 3pm on Sunday, January 15, 2023, at the American Legion Post #225, 10114 Old Town Trail, Ozawkie, KS 66070.
