George Allen Smith, age 87, of Topeka, KS, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2020 at Aldersgate Village, with his beloved wife Clara at his side.
George was born in Des Moines Iowa, on January 9, 1933, son of George and Margaret Smith. His father was active in the Army military and the family lived in many different cities while George was growing up before settling in Leavenworth, KS. George is an Army veteran who served 2 years during the Korean war. He then resided in Topeka, worked and retired from Kansas Power and Light after 40 years of dependable employment. He took a sandwich for lunch every day, and never missed a day of work.
George was married to Clara (Briant) Smith in 1969, she survives. Other surviving family members are his two children, daughter Michelle Dougan (Lynchburg, VA) and son Rob Smith (Topeka), daughter-in-law Cindi (Turgeon) Smith (Topeka), and his grandchildren Skylar, Colby, Dylan, and Macy Smith.
George is preceded in death by his parents George and Margaret Smith, his brother Bob Nysmith, and his eldest grandchild Beau Dougan.
George was an avid golfer, loved baseball, wood carving, and enjoyed completing "projects" for his wife around the house and yard. He was a dad, a coach, and a mentor to his kids. After he retired, he enjoyed accompanying Clara to do her weekly grocery shopping and then taking the grandkids all of the treats they had bought for them. His favorite and most important role in life was being a grandpa. He was patient and kind, and spent countless hours with his grandkids playing games, reading, playing outdoors, and taking them on vacations. Grandpa George played an enormous role in shaping his grandkids into the amazing people they are today. He was a kind and generous soul, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
George will be cremated and, due to covid, the family will have a private burial at Mount Hope Cemetery.
