George Erna McGurk, 83, Topeka, Kansas, passed away November 17, 2019. He was born in Homestead, Pennsylvania to George Erna and Hilda Marion McGurk. He was a graduate of Wilkinsburg High School and studied at Moody Bible Institute of Chicago and Dallas Institute of Hebrew Studies. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served with the Army Security Agency in the Far East. He was stationed in Japan with the ASA Command Issuing Office and received many awards during military active duty.
He worked with the Bell Telephone Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and later transferred to Kansas. He retired as a manager with South Western Bell Telephone in 1990 and continued working as an engineer for Christian radio. He was active in Kiwanis International. He could often be found working in his garage building or repairing something, often joined by his children and later grandchildren. He had a love of electronics and motors and could fix or build anything. He had a tool for every job. George loved being in service to others whether helping to repair a car or serve as a chaplain or counselor when needed.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Charlene (Thompson) McGurk. George and Edith met in Japan where she was serving as an American Baptist missionary. They married in 1958 in Chanute, Kansas. He is survived by son, Nathan Paul McGurk (Janette) of Cyprus; daughter, Wendy Susan McGurk of Lawrence, Kansas; sister, Carol Berezik (Gene) of Aurora, Ohio. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by sisters Marion, Dorothy, and Norma, and brothers David and Arthur.
Services will be held at Grace Bible Church 4021 SE 37th St Topeka, KS 66605 at 10:30 on Saturday, November 23. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Transworld Radio earmarked in support of Hannah McGurk or the Topeka Rescue Mission.
