Gayla Christine Slusser, 55, passed away in her home in Topeka, Kansas on August 13, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Gayla was born on December 21, 1966 in Topeka to Diane Burris and was adopted at just a few days old and raised by Gene and Nellie Slusser. She graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1985 and Washburn University in 1990 with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice. Her working career was mostly spent with the Kansas Department of Revenue.
Gayla is survived by her sister, Joyce Slusser, (Baldwin City, Kansas), her birth mother Diane Burris (San Angelo, Texas), her four beloved feline friends: Dori, Luna, Dottie, and Ella, and many dear friends worldwide - many of whom enjoyed playing games with Gayla online or in-person. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Known for her infectious laugh and competitive spirit, Gayla loved playing games such as Spades (for which she will forever be known as the tenacious Queen of Spades who didn't lose often). Her artistic nature and attention to detail was demonstrated through the creation of hundreds of beautiful cross-stitched art pieces which now hang in the homes of friends and family. Gayla was also passionate about following her favorite teams: the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. A highlight during Gayla's cancer battle was receiving a personal video message from her favorite athlete, Salvador Perez. She will be remembered for the way she impacted many lives through her joyous spirit, faithfulness, competitiveness, and love for friends, family, and of course her cats.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life gathering on Saturday August 27th 1-4 PM, at First Southern Baptist Church of Topeka, 1912 SW Gage Blvd., where Gayla had been a member for life. Gayla requested memorial donations be made to Helping Hands Humane Society.
