Gary Wayne Rose

April 28, 1961 — October 27, 2024

Gary Wayne Rose, known affectionately to all as Gary, embarked on his final adventure on October 27, 2024. Born on April 28, 1961, in Topeka, Gary's life was a vibrant tapestry woven with love, laughter, and the kind of stories that would make even the sternest of faces crack a smile. He was a man who saw life through a lens of humor, bringing joy to those around him even as he took his last bow in Kansas, surrounded by the love of his family.

Gary's journey began in the arms of his parents, Arvin and Barbara, both of whom had previously taken their curtain calls, alongside his brothers Alan, Jim, and Frank. His story continued alongside his surviving siblings, Mike Rose and Janette Patterson, and was enriched by the love of his life, Karen, with whom he shared the most beautiful and uproarious of life's chapters.

A proud graduate of Jeff West High School (Meriden) in 1979, Gary continued to broaden his horizons at Emporia State University. His career was as diverse as his interests, from capturing moments at Wolfe's and Zercher Photo to organizing forms at Adams Business Forms, and even ensuring everyone had their favorite chips on hand during his time at Frito Lay. Gary was as multifaceted as the coins he loved to collect.

Speaking of hobbies, Gary was a man of many passions. His love for photography was only matched by his skill in target shooting, a metaphor for his ability to focus on the good in life and hit the bullseye of happiness. He played softball for MDA with the enthusiasm of a major leaguer and collected sports cards with the dedication of a true aficionado. A history enthusiast, Gary could often be found grilling up a storm, flipping burgers, and tales with equal flair. Camping under the stars, he'd regale his (26) grandkids and (12) great-grandkids with stories, making history seem as fresh and exciting as the morning dew.

Gary's sense of humor was as legendary as his kind and generous spirit. He was the kind of guy who lived by the words of the great Robin Williams, "You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it." And lose it, he did not. Gary embraced his spark of madness, lighting up rooms and hearts with his infectious laughter.

As a music lover, Gary's life playlist was a mix of classic rock anthems and the soft ballads that reminded him of slow dances and first kisses. He was the funny uncle, the kind neighbor, and the generous friend, all rolled into one unforgettable character. His life was a testament to the joy that can be found in the everyday, the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Gary's legacy is one of joy, a collection of moments and memories that will continue to bring smiles to the faces of those he touched. He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife Karen; children Debra, Greg, Eric, Doug, Christine, and Brad; and a legion of grandkids and great-grandkids who will carry his stories and his spark into the future.

In a world that often takes itself too seriously, Gary was a reminder that life is better when you're laughing. As we say goodbye to this incredible man, let's honor his memory by living as he did—with kindness, generosity, and a healthy dose of humor. After all, as Gary would say, "Life is like a camera. Just focus on what's important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don't work out, take another shot." Here's to you, Gary. You've developed into our hearts, and the picture of your life is one we'll cherish forever.
