Gary Robert Lewis, known affectionately as Gary to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 7, 1957, in Kansas City, MO, Gary's warm spirit and vivacious personality left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He departed from this world in Topeka, KS, surrounded by the love of his family.
A proud veteran of the US Navy, Gary devoted himself to a life of service, both in uniform and in his civilian life. Following his military career, he worked in electric motor sales and service at Independent Electric Machinery Co., where he was respected by colleagues and customers alike for his expertise and integrity. Gary retired after working for seventeen years in building maintenance for K1 Realty.
Gary's education journey began at Northeast High School in Kansas City, MO, where he laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. His commitment to learning and excellence was evident in all his pursuits, and his work ethic was unparalleled.
Family was the cornerstone of Gary's life. He is survived by his mother, Kathleen Lewis; loving wife, Jill Lewis; his son, Brandon (Michelle) Lewis, and his granddaughters, Serenity, Miranda, Clarissa, and Mandi Lewis, as well as his great-grandson, AJ Fowler. Siblings Cheryl (Keith) Sims; Kim Grady (Joe F.); April Lewis (Doug); Mark (Kelly) Lewis, and Mike (Devin) Lewis. Also, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, and his grandparents.
An enthusiastic Kansas City Chiefs fan, Gary's passion for sports was a thread that ran through his entire life. His interest wasn't limited to just football; he loved all sports and could often be found cheering on his favorite teams with the same fervor he brought to every aspect of his life. Gary was also an avid fisherman. He relished the thrill of the catch, especially the big catfish, and took great pleasure in sharing his haul, frying up a delicious feast for family and friends. Going camping in the Windjammer became a favorite pastime in the last years.
In his earlier years, Gary was known for his involvement with sports collectibles. He traveled to malls all around the area, setting up card shows and selling unique sports treasures. Some of these treasures were so special to Gary that they made their way into his personal collection, where they remained as cherished mementos after he retired from the card show circuit.
Known for being a "pretty darn good cook," Gary's culinary skills were yet another way he expressed his love for those around him. His dishes were not only a treat to the taste buds but also a testament to his belief in the power of sharing a meal to bring people together.
As we remember Gary, we reflect on the words of Helen Keller: "What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Gary's love, laughter, and legacy are deeply woven into the fabric of his family's lives and will continue to be a guiding force for generations to come.
