Ernest Dale Schmidt, known affectionately to all as Ernie Schmidt, passed away peacefully in his home in Delia, Kansas, on October 2, 2026. He was born in Medford, Oklahoma, on June 19, 1942, to his parents, Erna (Fleming) Schmidt and Albert Schmidt. Ernie lived a life filled with warmth, laughter, faith, and love for those around him.
To know Ernie was to know a friend. He truly never knew a stranger and had a special way of making everyone feel welcome. His big smile, great sense of humor, and easygoing personality brought comfort and joy to his family, friends, and neighbors. He loved talking with others and could turn even an ordinary conversation into a meaningful connection.
Ernie's faith was an important part of his life. He graduated from Oklahoma Bible Academy in 1960, and attending church just about every Sunday remained a cherished part of his routine. He deeply valued his church family and the fellowship he found there, and he was always disappointed when he had to miss a service.
For over 40 years, Ernie was a dedicated employee at Payless Cashways. His long career reflected his strong work ethic, loyalty, and dependable nature, earning the respect of those he worked with and served.
Above all, Ernie's family was the center of his world. On April 29, 1973, he married Dianna Lee (Jesseph) Schmidt in Newton, Kansas. Together, they built a life filled with love and devotion and were blessed with nine children: Heather Emery and her husband, Chad Emery; Joshua Schmidt; Amber Smith; Marquis Schmidt; Michael Schmidt; Damian Schmidt; Faith Schmidt; Destiny Schmidt; and Grace Schmidt. Their family continued to grow through the years with several cherished grandchildren who brought him great joy.
Ernie treasured spending time with his family, especially the simple moments at home. He enjoyed playing card games with his children, working on word search puzzles, sharing stories, and simply being together.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, Erna (Fleming) Schmidt and Albert Schmidt; and his brothers, Wesley Schmidt and his wife, Betty Schmidt; Harold Schmidt; and Allen Schmidt.
Ernie leaves behind a lasting legacy of kindness, faith, laughter, and love. His family will forever cherish his warm conversations, bright smile, and the unconditional love he gave as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Though he is deeply missed, the love and memories he created will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life honoring Ernie will be held on Thursday, October 15th, at 11:00 a.m. at Rossville United Methodist Church, 411 Pearl St., Rossville, KS 66533.
