Ellis Lee Herrera, of Topeka, Kan., passed away peacefully in his home on August 25 at the age of 87. Lee was born to parents Joe and Maria Herrera on October 8, 1930, in Newell, S.D. He grew up as the third eldest of nine children.
Lee shared the last 40 years with his wife, Bette, who faithfully loved and cared for him throughout their marriage. He was the father of five wonderful children, three of which he has joined in heaven.
A lifelong learner, Lee regularly read books and the newspaper, completed crosswords, and watched the news. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, giving his dogs treats and love, and playing golf.
Lee is survived by his wife, Bette; daughters, Maria Jones (Larry) and Robin Dudley (Rick); siblings, Bill Herrera, Art Herrera, Carmen Martinez, and Ester Triplet; four grandchildren, Jodi Maxey, Toby Herrera, Jessica Herrera, and Nick Herrera; and five great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his sons, Ellis Lee Jr., Vern, and Terry; parents, Joe and Marie; and three brothers, Merle, Ben, and Joe Herrera, and sister Rory Landers. The family is grateful for the condolences and requests any donations be sent to Midland Care Hospice in his memory. A memorial service will be held Sept. 6, at 10 a.m., with a visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m., at Fellowship Bible Church in Topeka.
