Elaine Isabella Mechtley, 88, passed peacefully at her home on November 21, 2024, with her beloved husband and children by her side.
Elaine was born on July 29, 1936, in Burlingame, Kansas to David and Lorena (Mundy) Easton. She graduated from Burlingame High School, then attended Votes School for Secretarial Management. On August 11, 1954, she married the love of her life, Theodore (Ted) Mechtley, who together celebrated 70 years of marriage. Elaine had several roles throughout her career, including working at David's Department Store, Graves Drug Store, and Bank Telling at Citizen's National Bank in Emporia; however, she prided herself most on her roles as "Mom," "Grandma," and "Granny."
Elaine was an avid sports enthusiast, often having multiple TVs on in the living room to watch games simultaneously, with a computer on the side to keep up with other scores, or by attending her own grandchildren and great-grandchildren's sporting events. Elaine and Ted have had many hobbies and passions over the years – they have spent much time traveling (near and far); Elaine took quilting classes and made many quilts by hand for her loved ones; and enjoyed spending time at the Casino!
Elaine is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Almeda Easton and Alice Easton, and brother Tommy Easton. She is survived by her husband, Ted Mechtley and their dog, Cody; her brother David Easton (Virginia); and four children – Linda McDiffett (Gregg); Gary Mechtley (Leslie); Diann Diehl (Terry); and Karen Whitmore (Damon Adkins).
Elaine, "Grandma," is left with many grandchildren. Shannon Wertzberger (John); Rusty McDiffett (Pam); Jake McDiffett; Ryan Peckett; Amanda Mechtley; Kelsey Smith; Ty Diehl (Taylor); Tyler Whitmore (Ashley); Lindsay Morales (Abraham); and Karly Lauer (Jim). Elaine was also known as "Granny" to her 15 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the VFW in Emporia, KS (932 Graphic Arts Road) on November 30, 2024, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. Refreshments, snacks, love, and memories will be provided. Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to Hand in Hand Hospice.
Elaine will be remembered for her grace, kindness, strength, and unwavering love for her family and friends.
