Doreen Overman

June 27, 1940 — February 9, 2016

Doreen Overman died in peace at her home on February 9, 2016. Throughout her life, she continually challenged herself to increase her understanding of her relationship with God.

Doreen was born on June 27, 1940, in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada, into the family of her parents, Mabel and Hollis Toal and her brother, Hollis Jr. The family moved to Parsons, Kansas, in 1949 for the purpose of increasing educational opportunities. The family then moved to Topeka and became citizens of the United States in 1956.

Doreen married Lynne Overman in 1960, and they had four children and seven grandchildren; Tamara Overman (Cody, Wray and Ben), Joel Overman (Morgan and Marlow), Monique Overman Kueker (Grace and Claire) and Byron Overman (who has always had the joy of a child within). Doreen and Lynne were also a part of the Family Care Program at Menninger, through which they had many youth and adults share in their family life. Doreen was committed to God and her husband, Lynne. They were members of Grace Episcopal Cathedral and enjoyed working with the youth programs, especially at Camp Wood. Doreen and Lynne grew in their relationship through their involvement with Marriage Encounter.

Doreen was a special education teacher and taught science for 21 years at the special purpose school for troubled youth, Capital City High School. Doreen developed a compassionate awareness of multicultural issues, which led her to become a Multicultural Trainer for the Topeka School District during her teaching career. Doreen learned to be aware of the importance of all moments, and she believed she made a difference in the lives of many of her students. In the year 2000, she became an instructor in the Adult Program at KATS. It was a blessing for her to work with the adults there.

Doreen believed it was important to face into death and to live life fully. Please rejoice in her journey and be glad in the Lord. A service in celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, February 21, at Grace Cathedral. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Cathedral Altar Guild Linen Fund or Midland Hospice Care.
