Donald Howard Allen

October 7, 1947 — July 13, 2024

Donald Howard Allen, known affectionately as Don to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2024, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 76. Born on October 7, 1947, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, Don's life was a testament to his kind, generous, and creative spirit.

Don was a proud graduate of AD Eisenhower High School, Pennsylvania, where he first demonstrated his love for learning and his natural ability to lead and inspire those around him. After high school, he dedicated himself to serving his country, first in the United States Air Force and later as a member of the Air Force Reserves. Don's work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident throughout his career, which included valued positions at Carrol's Electronics, Intracity Transit in Topeka, Avondale TV, and the Kansas State Hospital's Preadolescent Unit.

Beyond his professional life, Don was a man of many passions. He had a talent for working with his hands, a skill that brought joy to his life and those he helped. He was a man who cared deeply about God's creatures, often stopping to help turtles safely cross the road, a small but telling example of his kindhearted nature.

Don was a devoted family man, deeply committed to his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Deborah Allen (Harris), and his beloved son, Nathaniel Allen (Christie, surviving spouse). His legacy lives on through his children: Donald Allen Jr (Charmin), Rebecca Coons (Ken), Thomas Allen (Rasha), Thaddaeus Allen (Michelle), Rachael Weber (Jeremy), Abigale Lord (Clayton), Jeremiah Allen (Lindsay), and Jonathon Allen (Laura). He also leaves behind 25 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Each of them carries forward the values and lessons he instilled through his unwavering love and guidance.

In his quieter moments, Don found solace and expression in writing poetry to Deborah. His words, often reflective of the beauty he saw in the world and the faith he held close, will remain a treasured part of his family's heritage.

Those who knew Don would describe him as the embodiment of kindness and generosity. He had a creative soul that saw the beauty in the everyday and sought to make the world a better place through his actions and words. As the poet Emily Dickinson once wrote, "If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain." Don lived by this philosophy, touching the lives of many and leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Don's life was a journey of love, commitment, and faith. He was a beacon of light for his family, a steadfast friend, and a compassionate member of his community. His memory will be cherished, and his legacy will continue to inspire.

As we say goodbye to Don, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved. His was a life rich in experiences and filled with the love of family and friends. Don's story is one of joy, laughter, and the enduring power of kindness and faith. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of walking alongside him in this journey of life.
